fat tuesday

Lent was the topic of conversation over breakfast, Lexi leading the way, coming up with strange food sacrifices for Jesus. I told her to get in line; Zack and I have that department wrapped up quite nicely, thank you, and one more dietary restriction may send me right over the edge.

I'm steering her towards giving up anger or pouting or IKEA envy, a suggestion that made her angry and pout-y, slamming her door to be alone with her catalog.

Fish on Friday is sounding better all the time.

I am heartened by this news.

Lisa, can you remember behaving this way growing up? Because I honestly cannot.

Freddy's has catfish and bay scallops on sale. I think Jesus would like that.

I am giving up sauerkraut and pigs feet for Lent. And no, I never eat them anyway.

Speaking of Lent, have you seen Chocolat?

Last year I gave up coffee which was really a good exercise - sort of like a de-tox.

Since I am still recovering from the surgery, I am just going to do vegetarian cooking on Ash Wed. and the 7 Fridays. Its a great opportunity to try vegetarian recipes that I love but somehow fall out of regular rotation in my family menu planning.

I gave up lent .. years and years ago. But if I had known daughters could give up anger and slamming doors? I would have stuck with it!

Last year instead of giving anything up, Carlie and I tried to do good deeds. 40 days of lent = 40 good deeds. Anonymous good deeds. I think we did, um, three? But this year we shall do better, I swear it.

I gave up giving anything up. I know, it defeats the purpose, but it makes me MUCH easier to live with!

My Son is having trouble coming up with something to give up - being he's 16 and all, perhaps you could persuade him to give up sass-mouthing his mamma? Particularly since she has given up all forms of alcohol? My children might not survive lent...

Ha. I have a friend who used to be a Christian who now likes to mock some Christians' stupidity-in-the-name-of-faith. I don't condone some of his tactics, but a lot of what he writes about rings very true. Anyway, he blogged recently about the silliness of American Christians giving up Facebook for Lent. He says "There is a deep and wondrous irony in all those people not realizing how much that cheapens the very thing about which they are supposed to be reflecting. The irony extends to the idea in the previous paragraph that Lent is a good time to sacrifice our addictions."
